The first Christmas I tried the Ralph Lauren look, I got it completely wrong. I bought a plaid throw, a velvet ribbon, and a pair of brass candlesticks, then I scattered them around the house like clues in a treasure hunt and wondered why nothing felt right. My living room looked like a store display…
I still remember our first Christmas in this house. The tree was up, the lights were on, the stockings were hung, and something still felt off. I stood in the living room with a mug of cocoa and tried to figure out what was missing. Then I looked up. The walls were bare. Big, white,…
The first Christmas tree my husband and I put up together, we did everything right and still got it wrong. We spent a whole Saturday on that tree. We fluffed every branch, hung every ornament in threes, wrapped the lights so evenly you could not see a single wire. Then we stepped back, and the…

Intro: The Night My House Stayed Dark Last December I drove home after dark and turned onto my street, and every house seemed to be glowing except mine. My neighbor had warm lights in every window, like little lanterns in a row. The house across the street had a simple pine wreath in one window…
Intro: The Staircase I Walked Past for Three Christmases For three Christmases in a row, I decorated everything in my house except the staircase. I did the tree, the mantel, the table, even the bathroom, and then I walked past those plain wooden stairs a hundred times a day like they were invisible. Guests would…
I still remember the first Christmas in our own house. I had a long list, a small budget, and a living room that looked, well, very plain. I walked through a home decor store, picked up one pretty garland, saw the price tag, and quietly put it back down. That night I sat on the…
